Unit4, page103 writing- Downloading music off the Internet is acceptable?

Last week, Saturday and Sunday my town blacked out and after that the Internet cable was broken.

Because of that I had to complete my assignment two days late.....

Music, it is never to be free

Hannah Kim

These days, one of the most controversial argument is about copyright and intelletual property. Some people suggest that all people have right to enjoy musics or movies not paying. They say that people would decide whether to buy after enjoying all the musics or movies they were interested in, if they are worth buy and keep for a long time. On the other hand, there are also many people who are against to this idea. They think that all the musics and movies are just the same as the normal properties, therefore if there is anyone who wants to share these, it is like a theft. Although I think both sides are understandable, I agree to the saying that the musics or all the different forms of intelletual properties are to be paid.

First of all, I believe that musics or movies are also the valuable properties for the people who produced them. This is what intellectual property is about. The definition of this term is an intangible asset, such as a copyright or patent and this is also a kind of properties that can belong to someone and others cannot share. Therefore, I think that making music is the same as working in the workplace for normal people. The music producers or singers have to make fair amount of money with their own musics, selling to the public and this is like workers being paid salaries. However, when all the musics are shared in the Internet, not being charged, the people who support their own lives with these musics should suffer from unfair treatment in making money, since they cannot make enough profits.

Second, paying for musics that we own is helpful for the development of the music industry. It is natural that if there are not enough capital, it is impossible to improve. For example, people cannot try a fresh, new technical change without money that can handle this. In addition, when people are disappointed and frustrated due to the fact that they cannot earn the fair amount of money with their music, they would not that passionate as before, making music. They would not be motivated because their living does not go better with their ard work. Thus, it is necessary to pay for their hard work and production.

Although there are many people who say that today's musics are not worth paying because they are all similar and have no deep meaning or emotion inside. I also agree with this thinking, but I do not think that this fact justifies the free downloading and sharing of the musics. I believe that if the musics are bad in quality, people should not enjoy listening these. They tend to get the free, illegal musics from the Internet and listen, complaining that it does not worth money if they have to pay money. This is ridiculous because I think that they actually like the music, regardless the fact whether the quality of these musics are good or not. Then, it is natural to pay for having a good time listening to those musics.

In conclusion, I do not think it is acceptable to download or share musics freely and illegally off the Internet. Musics should be seen as a one from of intelletual property and they have copyrights and values as tangible properties. In addition, there should be fortune to develop the music industry and this means that people 'buy' the music. This would lead to good conclusion for the consumers also, because they can listen to fine and fresh musics.

  1. Hannah,

As you commented on my essay, your thought is really similar to mine except introduction!
I was really surprised at your counter-argument.However, I felt that it is a good start for good downloader society. We already developed bond of sympathy.^^

It doesn't necessary to mention your main point.

I would rather attach some comments.
    Your introduction looks okay. But I have little doubt about your generalization. Is really there people who think all people have right to enjoy music or movie without paying? I thought people download music even though they felt guilty for their behavior. Maybe I am wrong. It just too strong idea to me. I would little tone down the idea like below;
Some people suggest that they do not need to pay for the music or movie before they enjoy it.They say they will decide~
    (But I can be wrong.^^)

And, it would be better to use more attractive hook.

Thank you! It was interesting essay.

Music, it is someone’s Hard Work!

These days, one of the most controversial arguments is about copyright and intellectual property. Some people suggest that all people have right to enjoy music or movies not paying. They say that people would decide whether to buy after enjoying all the music or movies they were interested in, if they are worth buy and keep for a long time. They also say that it is unfair to buy without knowing the quality of the music and if that is my favorite style. On the other hand, there are also many people who are against to this idea. They think that all the music and movies are just the same as the normal properties, therefore if there is anyone who wants to share these, it is like a theft. Although I think both sides are understandable, I agree to the saying that the music or all the different forms of intellectual properties are to be paid.

First of all, I believe that music or movies are also the valuable properties for the people who produced them. Although it is intangible, therefore many people do not think the value of those that seriously, this is what intellectual property is about. The definition of this term is an intangible asset, such as a copyright or patent and this is also a kind of properties that can belong to someone and others cannot share. Therefore, I think that making music is the property that exactly belongs to the makers and this work should be seen as same as the work in the workplace for normal people. Then the music producers or singers have to make fair amount of money with their own music, selling to the public because this is like workers being paid salaries. However, if all the music is shared in the Internet, not being charged, the people who support their own lives with music should suffer from unfair treatment in making money, since they cannot make enough profits.

Second, paying for music that we own is helpful for the development of the music industry. It is natural that if there is not enough capital, it is impossible to improve or make a progress of quality. For example, people cannot try a fresh, new technical change without money that can handle this. In addition, when people are disappointed and frustrated due to the fact that they cannot earn the fair amount of money with their music, they would not that as passionate as before, making music. They would not be motivated because their living does not go better with their hard work. Thus, it is necessary to compensate for their hard work and production.

Of course, there are many people who say that today's musics are not worth paying because they are all similar and have no deep meaning or emotion inside. I also agree with this thinking, but I do not think that this fact justifies the free downloading and sharing of the music. I believe that if the music is bad in quality, people should not listen to these. However, they seem to want to get the free, illegal music from the Internet and listen, complaining that it does not worth money, therefore they cannot pay for it. For this, I think they actually enjoy the music, putting aside the fact whether the quality of the music is good or not. Then, it is natural to pay for having a good time listening to music.

In conclusion, I do not think it is acceptable to download or share music freely and illegally off the Internet. Music should be seen as a one from of intellectual property and they have copyrights and values as tangible properties. Making music and selling the music file should be considered as their work or job. In addition, there should be fortune to develop the music industry and this means that people 'buy' the music. This would also lead to good end for the consumers, because they can listen to fine and fresh music.
