Unit 6, Pg.176, Cartier-Bresson, Yooran Kim

Cartier-Bresson's two photographs

Even though you are on the street where there is a crowd of people, you can feel lonely. Even though you are on a bench watching a bird in the park where there is no one else, you may not feel lonely. But no one knows that you are lonely in the crowd, and everyone thinks you are lonely if you are alone at the park. The photographs, however, show viewers the essence they can easily miss, and the essence becomes visible when a photographer creates the composition that helps viewers read the mood in the photographs. I'd like to share two best-known photographs of Cartier-Bresson who is famous for capturing "a decisive moment" of subjects' actions or facial expressions after observing the subjects.

The first photograph portrays the world-famous writer and philosopher "Jean-Paul Sartre" with a pipe in his mouth, talking with literature critic Jean Paul Han. Sartre is wearing a heavy overcoat against cold and wearing black thick glasses. Lost in thought, he is standing on a bridge, and gazing beyond the camera. The silence between them makes us feel the weight of their thoughts. The grey background that looks moist absorbs him into environment. The angle is focused only on a main subject, and the foggy background that become much vague going farther, makes us concentrate on a subject and feel how deep and abstruse their thoughts are.

The second photograph portrays the world-famous actress "Marilyn Monroe." She is often cited as a pop and cultural icon as well as eminent American sex symbol with dumb blonde. However, Marilyn Monroe in this photo looks dignified without her luxurious lifestyle. She is sitting on a chair wearing a black dress, and staring to the direction where the camera is on the foreground. There is a crowd of people behind a partition, and they all look like her fans. Although Marilyn was on the focus in the center with soft light, the photograph is very clear overall. The up-and-down divided composition of this photograph separates people to up and to down, therefore, Monroe and other people look separate even though they are in the same area.

The photograph of "Jean-Paul Sartre" gives its full focus on a main subject in the center that leads viewers' eyes stay on him getting helped by the vague background. On the other hand, the photograph of "Marilyn Monroe" captures everything in the room but viewers are able to focus on a main subject by distinct color disposition getting helped by soft light that makes her glow. Even though Marilyn Monroe was made to sex symbol for a commercial purpose, viewers can find Marilyn Monroe in this picture as a normal beautiful woman who was photographed from warm-hearted point of view. The photograph of "Jean-Paul Sartre" gives us impression of cold background but the heat that comes from the intellectuals' passion. That's why viewers don't think Sartre looks lonely in this picture even with silence. On the other hand, in the photograph of "Marilyn Monroe," Marilyn is surrounded with people who give their interest on her, but she turns her eyes beyond the camera staring nothing. Her mysterious look with subtle facial expression makes viewers feel that she is lonely even with a crowd around her.

Cartier-Bresson did amazing work capturing a "decisive moment" from two subjects in his photographs. The one with "Sartre" has very quiet mood in the background that makes Sartre more active, while Monroe in the photograph of "Marilyn Monroe" is very still on the contrary to noisy-look like background. These two photographs are the perfect examples of that show viewers the essence of a subject that they can miss. The compositions of two photographs are slightly different, and the contrast between a subject and background did a wonderful job in extracting the "real truth" of decisive moment.

Hannah Kim - Helen Levitt's photograph

Two pictures from Helen Levitt and reaction

201000955 Hannah Kim

There is a famous American Photographer, Helen Levitt. She focused on only one theme during her all career, American back street and slum. This is very special and unusual for her because there are nearly no photographers who focus on only one theme and subject during their entire picturing career. She pictured many children in that area, playing with each other, eating and laughing. Not only that, she pictured many scenes of those places and adults, worrying about money problem or their sick children. Here, I will describe two different pictures from Helen Levitt and mention my impression.

The first picture that I will introduce is about a scene of tree and a building seemed to be destroyed. The main center of interest is a tree in the middle. There is a man who is leaning on the tree, who is expressed very small and unfocused. For the background, there is a destroyed building, which seems to be a house on the right side. Overall, the scene is not in bright mood, but rather serious and blue. The man near the tree seems to concern about something and worrying about that. The tree also stands in the middle of the photo and all alone. Therefore it makes the people who appreciate that photo feel loneliness and isolation. The photographer seems that she wanted to capture the difficulties the people who lived in the back street in the U.S. had.

The second picture has completely different atmosphere. There are three kids playing on the street. They are laughing with their mouths wide open. The whole air of the picture is very light and delight. Although the environment in the picture seems not to be good, rather poor, all the children in the picture enjoy their time very much. These children is the center of the interest and as the background, there is a house and cars on the road. These children seem to have hope for their future, not frustrated. Helen seems to want to say that the children always do not lose their dream and hope although their environment can be different.

These two pictures were pictured by the same photographer, therefore they have common theme. It is the lives of the people who live in the back street if the United States, who are in difficult money condition. They even seem to have hard time making money for their eating. However, there is also a difference between them. The first picture which is about a tree and a destroyed building has a depressed and serious mood. On the other hand, the children in the second picture make a bright and cheerful air. In addition, in the first picture, the object, tree is the main feature, although people are the main in the second one.

In conclusion, these two picture pictured by Helen Levitt deal with the same theme, the lives in the back street or slum in America. Their environment is unbelievably unclean and destroyed. Therefore, an adult in the picture is very depressed and worried. However, there seems to be also a hope because of the kids living there. They are always bright and know how to enjoy their own time there.

Two photos (200700121)

By Yoonjin, Ko

I chose two family pictures which were taken in different time period. First one is our family picture when we had my baby brother's first year birthday. In this picture, there is my father in front holding my baby brother on his knee. Next to him, there is my grandmother. She is sitting on her wheel chair because of her back problem, but she is wearing beautiful Hanbok because it's a very special day. Behind my grandmother, I am there wearing pink jacket. I curled my hair smoothly to be a nice sister for my baby brother. Behind my father, my mother and my sister are standing there while smiling big. We are all wearing the best clothes for the special day. I like this picture very much because it is the first picture we all took together with my grandmother. Whenever I see this picture, I remember the day vividly. It was a rainy, cloudy day. Cold windy was blowing hard, so my family was very worried about our guests whether they can make it on time or not. Thankfully, most of them came to celebrate my baby brother's birthday even though the weather of the day was horrible. We were so grateful.

Next picture I chose is the one when we went to JaeJu Island. I like this picture because it is an active picture. In this picture, my father is holding my sister up high and trying to throw her to the blue ocean. I'm laughing hard beside them because it was so much fun to see that my sister is scared. I think we were standing very close to the ocean and the weather was very windy. I can see the palm trees are leaning to one side. My mom took this picture so she is not there. I was an elementary school at that time because I see that I was wearing my favorite hair band when I used in elementary school. My sister is shouting and struggling not to fall down. Whenever I see this picture, I laugh. It was a happy moment of my life.

Unit 5, Pg 144, Animal classification, Yooran Kim

Animal classification

200903992

Yooran Kim

On your birthday, I hand you a gift-wrapped box for your birthday present, saying "it is an animal." What would you expect it be? Since there are millions of animals on Earth, it would be easier for you to guess if I give you some hints to categorize the animals. If I say this animal is limbless and lives in the water breathing with gills, you may guess it is a kind of fish. On the other hand, if I say this animal lays eggs and flies the sky with its wings, you may guess it is a kind of bird. Actually there are five types of animals I can get you on this Earth. But I think you may want a warm-blooded flurry animal for your birthday gift that is called a "mammal." Let me introduce three kinds of animals: mammals, birds, and reptiles.

To speak about mammals, mammals are the kind we are most familiar with. We human are members of mammal class, too. Mammals characterized by the possession of hair, warm blood, and ability to give birth to live young and produce milk. According to a study, there are about 4,000 kinds of mammals known on Earth. The smallest one is S.minutissimus that is a kind of Sorex, and the biggest one is Balaenoptera musculus whose length is 33m and weigh is 179t. Whales, cats, dogs, pigs, gorillas, elephants, rabbits, hamsters, tigers, and lions are mammals around us.

The next class I'd like to introduce is birds. As you can observe birds flying in the sky, they are feathered, and have wings. However, not every bird can fly. There are two types in bird class. The birds that can fly with wings and the other birds that cannot fly even with wings. Penguin is a good example of latter one. Although most bird species can fly, Penguins, ratities, and a number of diverse endemic island species cannot fly. Also, among every bird that has a beak, some birds can mock verbal sign of people do. Some species particularly songbirds and parrots are one of them, and they are popular as pets. Birds are very social animals, so they communicate using visual signals and through calls and songs including cooperative breeding and hunting, flocking, and mobbing of predators.

Reptiles are animals that you have seen in the movie "Jurassic Park." Breathing air, laying shelled eggs, and having skin covered in scales and/or scutes are all characteristics of reptiles. Reptiles are aclassically viewed as a cold-blooded. Through the history of evolution, the reptiles took a role of bridge between mammals and birds. Iguanas, Chameleons, Lizards, Snakes, and crocodiles are all in reptile class. Since their skin is covered with scales that keep moisture from leaking outside, they can inhabit dry area such as deserts. Actually modern reptiles inhabit every continent with the exception of Antarctica.

So far, I explained three classes of animals that are mammals, birds, and reptiles. Every animal on Earth is related each other but these three have helped a lot each other to evolve. Although there are distinct characteristics on each animal class, we can always find some common features between them. This classification teaches us that we human are a kind of mammals, and really helps us to feel that we are one of animals living on this Earth.

     (201003252) Unit 6

Before and After Photo of Camera, Lights, and Action!

Depending on a situation people can easily be in a comfortable or anxious state of mind. A persons expressions are quite easily read in photos, whether they are feeling happy, sad, or even nervous. Here are two photographs taken in Cyber Hufs Media Center. The photos are taken of the leading actor and actress, they are playing roles of interracial dating and the drama and episodes that follow when being in a relationship. Both photographs are taken in the Cyber Hufs Media Center but the body language and the overall mood of the photos are quite different considering before and after the camera is rolling.

In the first photo on the top, you can see the two frontal shot of the two faces which makes the features of the individual faces noticeable. The girl in the photo is facing the camera while smiling. If you look closely at her shoulders and arms, she seems a bit tense. Both arms are on her side with her fingers tips slightly arched up. Her feet are close together, and she is wearing high-heels. If you look closely, she is standing on top of a wooden square box which looks to be about four to five centimeters tall. This explains why her body is so stiff, she may just be trying to keep her balance on the wooden block. However, looking at her smile you can easily assume she is relaxed and having a good time.

In the same photo the man is also facing the camera and with his mouth slightly in an O shape, smiling. You can tell that he is a bit more comfortable than the woman by looking at his poise. The man has his left leg tucked slightly back and placed on the foot stool while his right leg is placed comfortably on the carpet. His torso is slightly hunched over and his left shoulder is a bit lifted and his left elbow is bent outward while his fist is curled on his hip. Although you may not be able to tell from just the photo alone, the picture was taken a minute before the camera running, so the actor and actress are at ease and a playful and childish side of them are captured on the photo because the camera isn't rolling just yet.

Unlike the first photo, both the actor and actress are facing away from the camera and looking at each other. The woman has her hands placed on her sides and a lot of tension on her shoulders to keep her balance on the wooden block. She is looking at the male actor in a disturbed expression. Since she is facing the actor only half of her face is seen on the picture. Even though her face is not entirely visible, it is not hard to figure out the feeling the woman has toward the man. Looking at her arched right brow, it is evident that she is angry with the man.

If the first photo showed a sense of comfort from the male actress, the mood of the second photo is completely different. The man is also facing the woman and the photo was taken of his left profile. In contrast to the first photo where he is smiling with his mouth slightly opened, he has his upper and lower lips glued together. He has his head slightly bent forward while his eyes are engaging on the woman. The actor's shoulder is placed down with tension as if he is scared and in trouble. His feet are no longer relaxed on the floor. Both legs tucked back on the foot stool. Lastly, both hands are placed on his lap while he holds a Korean rice wine on his lap.

Two photos show a completely different mood. In one we can see the contentment and emotions portrayed liberally. The other shows tension and seriousness of the actor and actress as they are filming. The two photographs shows the differences in emotion when people are at leisure and at work. By oberserving the two photos we can feel the drama and tensity of mood change before and after the camera is filming.

Options for Vacation Plan

The scent of summer vacation is in the air. Though there remains another hump, the final exam, our mind seems to running off to somewhere. How can we enjoy our summer vacation happily? What differences can we make through vacation? I think that three options may be considered for our summer vacation plan according to your focus.

First, if you are interested in earning money, getting a job can be your choice. You may get a part-time job such as working at convenience store, coffee shop or restaurant. You may get paid 4500~ 5,000won per hour. Last summer vacation, I worked at a coffee shop as a part-time job and I ended up buying an airline ticket for Japan. If you want to earn more money, you may get a full-time job.

Second, if you want to build up knowledge, there are lots of ways you can do during vacation. You may attend summer school to make up classes you failed. You may find out language institution to improve your language skill. Maybe you will take culture academy such as making floral arrangement or tea ceremony. I liked reading books in community library and it gave me trivial but interesting knowledge. Relaxed vacation allows you to do what you want to do.

Finally, if you are willing to see the wide world, it is time to leave. You may plan overseas trip or travel around the country. Just by leaving your familiar environment, you encounter various people and events. Your experience will go on beyond your knowledge and your world will be expanded. A couple of years ago, when I went to Cambodia to see my friend, I met coexistence of poor and happiness. Through the trip, I realized how small the world that I live until now was.

Depending on your focus such as money, knowledge, or experience, your vacation plan changes. Therefore, for your meaningful summer vacation, you need to ask yourself: how can you enjoy your vacation? What differences do you want to make? Then, follow your heart and have a nice vacation.

p. 144 classification essay (Hannah Kim)

201000955 Hannah Kim

Categorizing Options for Vacation Plan

Many of us start our vacation by deciding where to go and planning how to spend time. In this situation, some of those categorize possible options for their vacation by the degree of their interest and others may categorize the options by places, such as sea or mountain. However, in my case, I categorize my travel option by kind of activities that I can do in the vacation place. To be specific, I write down all the possible or hope vacation places and for each of them I decide things that I can do such as eating or visiting or hiking.

To talk about the steps that I prepare my vacation and travel, firstly, I decide all the places that I want to visit and write them down. These places can be anywhere, from general concept such as sea or mountain to specific name of places such as Japan or Italy. Because this is the very first step of determining the destination of my travel or planning my vacation place, I note everywhere that come up to my mind without thinking about the difficulties visiting there. After thinking about all the places that I want to go, I start searching the place from several books and listening information from many people around me who traveled where I want to travel.

Then, next is thinking about the activities or programs which are representative where I want to have a vacation and travel. For example, in Japan many people go to pretty temples and hot springs. In Hungary Mozart Café is one of the most famous places and there many people say that all the people who visit that café should try Mozart cake, which is green peanut cream cake. So, when I think about all the activities or places that I can visit which are very popular, there are so many things that I can add in my future travel list. In my point of view thinking of these is great because I do not have to waste time finding interesting activities or visiting spots. In addition, if I do not do a research about the representative festivals or many different activities of certain place, I can find nothing in that short time, and then I have to stay there just doing or seeing normal things and activities such as the normal seen of many cities of amusement park.

Finally, I narrow the list of possible places and activities or place that worth visit in certain places. In this process, I weigh my degree of desire toward visiting some places. In the end, I choose just one or two places, and in some case as many places that I can handle during my travel or vacation as possible.

There can be of course many categorizing ways of planning the vacation and deciding the place to visit for travel. For example, there can be category divided by the degree of interest toward many travel place candidates. Also, people can categorize by the characteristics of spaces such as mountains or seas. However, I find these categories not so interesting but rather boring because it is not unique but too common way. When I categorize the places to visit by possible activities I can do or representative things which are unique for certain places, it would be memorable experience and remain as life time recollection.

Three abilities for my potential career.

By Yoonjin, Ko

I'm very much interested in marketing field, so I'm aiming to be a global marketer to sell products globally. To make my dreams come true, I believe that these three strong points will lead me to this lifetime career of myself.

First, languages skills, especially English ability is highly important and I'm quite confident with my English skills. Even though I have just only one year of studying abroad experience, I think I've maintained good English skills to communicate with foreigners in English. I got 980 score in TOEIC and Intermediate High level in OPIc which is very popular English speaking test. Also, I'm majoring in Japanese and I've studied Japanese more than 6 years. I can speak Japanese very well without studying abroad in Japan. When I first began to study Japanese in my high school, it was so much fun to learn new language. Japanese is very similar with Korean in grammar and I became to be fond of Japanese dramas and singers. I think that was the reason how I got the highest level of Japanese Language Proficiency Test in just two years of studying Japanese. I can learn new language relatively easily and that is my first strong point.

Second, analyzing skills, especially when I'm watching CFs, I'm trying to analyze each of CFs without even realizing doing so. I love to watch CFs which is not very common habit to others. When I watch CF, I find out its main point or meanings. I'm doing it without even knowing it, but it's a lot of fun to do. For example, LG air conditioner CF is with Tae Hwan, Park to fight with Yeon Ah, Kim. Recently, Yeon Jae, Son is with Tae Hwan, Park to promote LG's new air conditioner. Nobody around me understood or even was curious about Yeon Jae, Son, but I knew there must be some other reasons for Yeon Jae, Son to be in the CF. I found out the reason while I was watching the CF. She was for small, easy to move air conditioner which was a part of big air conditioner. Therefore, Tae Hwan, Park was for the big one and Yeon Jae, Son was for the small one. It's my habit to try to understand CF's main meanings and I think it is very useful feature to work as a marketer.

Lastly, I'm an active communicator. I'm good at public speaking especially, and I'm good at group discussion which is very important thing in work places to produce new marketing strategies. I prefer to take classes which are doing some presentations in class and I participate in it a lot. I like public speaking and I think my public speaking skills are becoming better and better every time. I make my presentation with 10-20-30 rule: 10 slides, in 20 minutes, with minimum font size 30. I got good grades in public speaking classes before, so I'm very confident with my public speaking skills.

These are the three strong points that I have for my future career. I will keep finding my new positive features from now on as well.

unit5-p.131 Leeyeonyoung

Becoming a Writer

Few years ago, I read a comic book titled Piano no Mori which means the piano forest. It was a story about a little boy named Kai who is becoming a pianist. His playing was so innocent and beautiful that touched people’s mind. From the moment I read this book I knew that it was exactly what I want to do; I wanted to be like him who touches people’s mind with words. How could he become such a pianist? How can I become like him? To answer this questing, it will be helpful to compare his abilities with mine according to his growth curve.

First, Kai was the one of the creative person enough to become an attractive pianist. Since he was very young, Kai have played a piano which thrown away in forest and piano was the only friend for him. Though he has never been taught piano, he liked piano and played it like a toy all the time. This innocent and joyful time might enable him to play unique and beautiful melodies. Like Kai, I have read books and scribbled something since I was young. I liked reading and writing both, and they were like playing with a toy. I just wrote something to be honest about my feeling. Because I never meant to show them other people, I could write them freely. This experience may enable me to write creative essays.

Second, Kai had interpersonal skills to achieve his dreams. He asked help frankly when he hit a brick wall, and found a mentor who gives him caring advices. When Kai listened to Chopin’s The Little Dog Waltz, he was so eager to play it that he asked help a music teacher. Though Kai hate him at first, the desire to play the Chopin allowed him to ask help and the music teacher became his mentor. In my case, I prefer to try to find a solution by myself but I do not afraid of asking help when I really need it. In addition, thanks to my wandering experience gave me various kinds of friends, I have mentors who give advices and support me.

Finally, knowledge was the necessary complement of success. Though Kai got wonderful talent to play a song by ear, he had to study to understand composer’s mind. As a rough diamond should be polished to become a sparkling jewelry, even Kai, a gifted child, needed to study a piece of Chopin to play it right. Similarly, becoming a writer requires a wide knowledge of life, including linguistic knowledge. For example, if I wrote review of Lie to Me, I might search for a deception expert to give more concrete image. Of course, I cannot say that I have knowledge to become a good writer. However, I will be willing to study to make up my lack of knowledge.

By comparing Kai to me, I tried to answer two questions: how could he become a pianist who played a touching song and how can I become a writer who writes a touching story. In conclusion, creativity, interpersonal skills, and knowledge are the abilities that I may or should possess. If all these abilities are combined, chance to be a writer who touches people’s mind will be bigger.

Unit 5, yooran Kim

Potentials I possess to be a writer

200903992

Yooran Kim

Since I was young, I have wanted to be numerous kinds of person. Just name it. I have been always busy to change my career from a president and a singer to a police officer and a stationery store owner. However, I've never changed nor given up to be one thing. It is a writer. I've always thought that I can have a second job as a writer. A Writer is not the kind of job that you need to be hired under the boss and do whatever you are told. Also no one can say exact skills a person needs to be a good writer. The qualities I will mention below are maybe subjective and not clear. But these are the qualities most of writers recommend for applicants to have.

The most basic quality needed to be a good writer is to have an insight. Lots of writers say that the insight of a writer comes from various experiences of life and scars from them. I cannot say that I was the one who had been through all the cruel and tragic events of the life, but I'm pretty sure I had suffered from my own experience and had lots of chances to agonize over the ways of world. In fact, everyone in this world has one's own happiness and sadness. Special experiences may able to help one write something interesting, but no one can react in the same way and that is why I think the most important thing is what you experienced, but how you accepted and thought about it.

The next basic quality needed to be a good writer is a keen observation. Writers never ignore or pass away what normal people just miss as they go by. It can be anything around us from things in your room to the today's news on TV. The reason why a keen observation is important is because that is what writers do. They sometimes break down the most normal and ordinary things to find out hidden meaning of it and shed new light on, so we could feel our lives and world in the different way. Basically, writers help people to retaste who and where they are, or what they are doing. That is the reason why people say we must read a lot of books to be a good person. My observation ability is not only for daily life but also for sentences. Whenever I read good sentences, I appreciate the beauty or sometimes desperation from them. I like to savor the moment. I think my being sensitive can be a good quality as a writer.

The last quality to be a good writer is an ability to create words and sentences. This skill is very essential to make one to be a good writer. Even though you have most amazing materials to write about, and a keen observation to see through everything, without authentic words and characterful sentences, you cannot attract your readers. You should have your own identity in your writing. I think I have some ability to describe well because I've always liked reading books and I didn't have many chances to watch TV or movie since I was young.

So far, I explained three basic and important skills to be a good writer. As I mentioned above, being a writer is little bit different comparing to other careers. It is pretty personal job so it doesn't need any TOEIC scores or teamwork. But because of that, because it is about one person brining his personal feeling out to the world with sophisticated words, it can be very hard to achieve without lots of practice and natural gift. Just like other careers, I must try really hard to be a good writer, especially the three qualities the most well-know writers recommended above.

Unit5, classification essay. Hannah Kim

The Things that I am Good at

201000955 Hannah Kim

Many jobs such as lawyers and interpreter, which many people wish to be, require many abilities. This include the ability to present one’s idea clearly and confidently, pronouncing it with perfect intonation. Because of this, what I learned since I was a little girl are the ability to express my opinion clearly and making a good eye contact.

Firstly, I learned how to express my opinion and thoughts clearly. This would be very beneficial for my career because all the works today are related to pursuading others. Then, the ability to express one’s opinion and idea clearly and confidently is one of the most important virtues. I learned how to speak confidently and clearly from many teachers. I informed of the skills of doing this, which includes clear prononciation, intonation and enough gestures with confidence. I practiced to deliver my discourse with adequate speed and gesture. Mant people who listened to my saying told me that it was great because they catched my main idea easily and they thought my speech was good enough to focus withought being irritated.

In addition, I also trained how to contact my eyes well when I give a speech to others and I believe this also would be a great merit for my future career. Many people would acknowledge that one of the most important things when giving a speech is to make a good enough eye contact. Audiances feel that it is boring when the speakers make no eye contact because they feel that they and speakers have to intraction and connection. This also lead to a lack of concentration to the speech. However, whenever I have a speech, I try to contact my eyes with all the people who listen to my discourse equally. This would make my audience focus on my speech well when I have a speech because of my work.

Actually, I put a tremendous amount of time and effort to get these abilities. Whenever I studied with my teachers in the past, all the teachers asked me to say clearly and confidently when I say in front of many people. Not only that, they also made me give confident and good enough eye contact. However, I had a difficulty with this because I am such a shy person. Many teachers scolded me for not being able to contact my eyes directly with others and I struggled to overcome this challenge. In the end, I became a little bit more comfortable to make direct eye contact. After all, I am very grateful for achieving these abilities but at that time, it was even painful.

In conclusion, I think my merits and strong points are the abilties to make a good eye contact and presenting my ideas clearly. Today, almost all the jobs, so-called professions, desired by many people ask their workers to have the ability of these two things. The reason is that the purpose for these jobs is to pursuade others and make them listen to my perspective. Therefore, these, my abilties to say confidently what I want to say and contact my eyes with audiences, I may be easier to pursuade the listeners and finally, the employers of mine who I will face in the future may feel this is great.

unit 4, Pg 114, Yooran Kim (200903992)

Key to work less and more leisure

200903992

Yooran Kim

'We buy more, but enjoy it less. More conveniences, but less time.             More experts, but more problems. More medicine, but less wellness. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life, not life to years. More leisure, but less fun.' This is the excerpt from the poetry 'The paradox of our time in history' by Jeff Dixon. It shows how different we are now from the past. No one can deny that we now have more timesaving devices in our homes. So are we working less and having more fun? It makes our life convenient and better in many ways so that we can work less and have more leisure time.

I guess most people would not want to work more than they have to even though they like what they do. Actually many people want to work less except few. If we have more time to spend for our selves and our families, the life would not be the same as it was. You will be able to find the reason you are in this world. But the problem is we're not really feeling that we work less and have more leisure time. Have you ever wondered why? Because using time is relative. Some people might say that people today are working harder and longer. I don't agree with that. The only reason they felt that way is because they take everything for granted.

Now we have very many 'smart devices' that shorten the time we have to use to do the work. We take them for granted and manage our time based on that. This is causing the feeling that we have less time than we actually do. For example, we have a computer, so we can buy stuffs in online, or can send a card or e-mails to our friends. All those stuffs would have taken us so many time if we were in the past. You have write down your message on the letter, and you have go to the post office to mail it. To reply back, you have to wait several days until your letter arrives to your friend and her letter arrives to you back. But these days, you can just type and click. You can reply right back even few minutes later if your friend checked it. So you can send a lot of short e-mails that does not really necessary which you would have never done if you were in the past. But nowadays, you can even sue a person on the Internet. Cheaper and easier means you would do it a lot even though it's not necessary.

People now and back then have same 24 hours. Again, I can't say we work harder than the people in the past. Maybe it is true that we do more work in quantity in shorter time.  Today we can go some place that would take 2 days for walk in one hour. We have  cars, airplanes, and lots of other vehicles. As time zone gets wider, our range of activity becomes wider, too. It means we can care more than we could in the past. It means we have to put more stuff in our plan, the list to do. Also, lots of fast interaction devices make us anticipate much faster respond. For example, there are few people who don't have a cell phone these days. Some studies show that over a half of students are addicted in cell phone and many people feel nervous if they don't have cell phone with them. You can get anything you want right now with a small thing in you hand. It certainly shortened your time to be wasted, but if you can't use it wisely, you can't enjoy the more time you've got from using the convenient devices.

There were few examples I pointed about why people feel they work harder and longer even though they have timesaving devices. It is true that those time devices save our time, but we definitely have problems using them wisely and appreciating the time we've got more from using those devices. Those devices offer us more convenient life style and more time that we can use for leisure. It is important not to take them for grant and waste the time. Also if you avoid being addicted in fast interaction, so you could feel the moment you've got, you will be appreciate that you work less and have more leisure time.

Voting Should Be Mandatory

Last Wednesday (27th April, 2011) was by-election day. I was excited to vote because it was the second election after I was given the right to vote. At the night, the news reported that the percentage of people who voted was expected to be over 50%. The news report added that it was an amazing voter turnout as the one of by-election. After hearing the news, I was quite embarrassed. This was because even though the election is important decision the people have, the other 50% of the people did not vote. As we can see in this election case, lower and lower turnout is a big problem that most governments need to deal with. I believe that voting should be mandatory for three reasons.

First, mandatory voting can serve as a solution for lowering voter turnout. If more and more people vote, public opinion, literally all people's opinion, can be reflected effectively. In this case, people can elect who they really want and who can represent the people. By setting voting as a mandatory, therefore, we can expect people would be satisfied the result of election, and the atmosphere would help the society be healthy.

Second, mandatory voting can prevent political apathy. Since people must vote, people would like to choose better one. In order to do this, voters can search the candidates or compare them. It will bring the positive effect because we can elect who really is proper in the position. As a result, mandatory voting can stimulates people to keep their eyes on politics including current political issues and members of National Assembly.

Some might say that voting should not be mandatory because people have a free will whether they vote or not. There are people who do not want to vote because they believe there is no one who are qualified among candidates. In that case, however, they can choose to cast a blank ballot. Even if voting is mandatory, voters still can cast abstention as a means of protesting the government. For the reasons, I believe free will issue is not a problem in implementing mandatory voting.

Many politicians are trying to seek out the way to solve lowering turnout. They usually say that more and more people vote if there is fresh policies. However, there are limitations. I believe voting should be mandatory because it is absolutely effective way to rise low voter turnout, to prevent political apathy without damaging people's free will.

unit4-p.114 Leeyeonyoung

The flower of democracy is withering away. Since our fathers and mothers gained the right to vote through a movement for democracy in 1987, voter turnout has dropped almost every election. Also, election violations such as bribes have been constant. In this situation, how can we make the flower of democracy blossom again? I believe that compulsory voting can be an answer for these problems.

First, compulsory voting leads higher turnout and representativeness. When voting in national elections becomes mandatory, more people get involved in an election and the turnout is likely to soars up sharply. In fact, in Australia or Belgium which has compulsory voting, turnout is over 90%. On the contrary, in Korea which has free voting, for the last two decades, the turnout for a presidential election dropped from 89.2% to 62.9% and the turnout for the election of members to National Assembly dropped from 75.8% to 46.1%. If we have compulsory voting, turnout will undoubtedly increase and consequently, chance of reflecting people’s voice will be bigger.

Second, compulsory voting helps lower illegality and corruption. When the turnout is low, it is relatively easy to rig an election. The principle is simple: The fewer voters you have, the more chance you manipulate. For example, when the turnout is about 40%, smart candidates may focus on sufficient condition, getting 20%. They may be tempted to give money or gift to voters to get their votes. However, when the turnout becomes nearly 90%, getting 20% is not sufficient condition anymore. Therefore, candidates will concentrate on not buying votes but listening people’s voice.

Some people insist that compulsory voting violates the right to abstain from voting. They say nonvoting is also the way to show people’s mind. On a moment’s thought, it may sound persuasive because we have the freedom to choose whether to vote. However, I believe that voting is a civic duty as well as a civic right. As we need a military duty or an obligation to pay taxes to build sound country, we need an obligation to vote to establish firm foundation for democratic country.

In conclusion, I think it is time to consider compulsory voting seriously. When we consider the real state of the election in Korea, it seems to be an effective solution; it can lead higher turnout and lower corruption. Though compulsory voting is still a controversial issue, if we can form a social consensus and improve our election system, the flower of democracy will blossom again.

Positive effects by finding birth parents. (200700121)

 By, Yoonjin, Ko (200700121)

I don't see any reasons for adopted children not to find out the identity of their birth parents. Even though their foster parents took care of them well, still there are enough reasons for them to look forward to meeting their birth parents. I don't think that finding birth parents is some kind of betrayal act or something that could hurt their adoptive parents. On the contrary, it could even have some positive effects on everyone including those adopted children, adoptive parents, and birth parents as well.

First, by finding their birth parents, adopted children could realize their own identity as well. Personal identity which could be the fundamental reason to exist, is very important to build up confidence and understand them fully. Some of adopted children have an identity crisis when they find out that they were adopted. When they realize their foster parents are not the birth parents and they are not physically related with their parents, in most cases, adopted children have hard time for understanding the fact and accept the reality. Mostly, this fact might lead them to feel helpless and desperate. Therefore, finding their birth parents could fill or at least try to fill the emptiness which most of adopted children have in their heart because of the fact that they were abandoned or unwanted from their birth parents.

Second, if adopted children meet their birth parents, they could find out reasons or background situation why their parents sent them to be adopted. You might think that this is not necessary, but I believe this is the chance to make huge step toward understanding and accepting the fact that they were adopted. I don't think that parents made their mind to give up their children easily or even willingly. So, if adopted children find out those hopeless situations which their birth parents had to face with, they could understand their parents from their heart.

Lastly, it is also a good idea for foster parent to let their adopted children find their birth parents because it doesn't mean that they would lose their children. After their adopted children find out their birth parents, they would realize the foster parents' effort and hard work while they raise them. I'm not saying that they adopted children because of some kind of compensation. But from the understanding how their foster parents raise them with great care, now adopted children can build their new relationship with their foster parents as well.

In conclusion, if those adopted children want to meet their birth parent or find out their identity, nobody can stop them doing so because it's their ways to find out their personal identification. And this is also good for foster parent as I mentioned before. Therefore, we shouldn't consider the action to find birth parent as a betrayal act for their foster parents. Thank you for reading my essay.

Adopted people, their Right to know their Past

Many people argue that for adopted children, their parents who raise them should have rights to decide whether to show their biological mothers to the kids. They concern that these parents who raise the adopted children can feel betrayal for their kids if their children want to know their birth parents. On the other hand, there are also other side that suggests that adopted people have right to know their origin or root. For that, they can see and meet their birth parents and know who they are. For this controversial issue, I am on the latter side. I believe that there are no problems to let the adoptees meet their biological parents after they grew up. It would be positive for them because they can know where they came from and be grateful even more to their parents who raised them.

To begin with, all the people have a curiousity for their birth and this is just same for the adopted. It can be even worse for them, because the parents who are raising the adoptees are not  ones who gave them birth. In some cases, the nationalities of children and parents can be differnet and this can cause a confusion to the kids because of the different appearance between them and their adopters. Then, it is natural for the adopted people to wish to see their real, birth parents once and find their identity. Therefore, it should be permitted for the adopted to meet their biological parents all the time they want. Although some adopters want to make their kids not meet their birth parents, it is not something that can be controlled by adopters or others. Meeting their own, biological mother is just a privacy and no one can decide what the adoptees do instead of them.

Not only that, after knowing their birth parents, the adopted can feel even more grateful feelings to the adopters, or the parents now. Maybe, the biological parents explained the reasons for not being able to raise them. In many cases, the birth parents want to see their children many years later after their kids are adopted because they want to apologize. Then, the adoptees may feel that they could be not nurtured well if there were no their parents who raised them. This can provide a chance for the children and the adopters to think onece more about their existence and the gratefulness of it.

Although some argue that if kids find their biological, it is really bad for their adopters' emotion, since they can feel kind of betrayal to their children and think that it is vein to raise kids that they did not give birth. The reason for this is that, the parents who adopted kids may feel when their kids start to find their biological parents, that the kids do not think them as real parents till now. They may also feel that it is of no use to take care of them with all the effort and hard work and to cherish them as their real children. However, it is not true to say so. The children cannot forget their parents' hard work of taking care of them just because they saw everything, living with them. Also, because people can feel all the feelings that others have toward them, the adoptees will definitely conscious that their parents kept loving and cherishing them. If the children say all these feelings they have to their parents who adopted and raised them, there cannot be any misunderstandings between the two. In the end, I find there are no problems, just finding their birth parents.

In conclusion, there will be no problems for both adoptees and the adopters if they let the adopted meet their biological parents. The adopted people can find their identity by knowing the birth parents, looking like them and think their adopters are very grateful. The parents who adopted the children also feel more appreciations to their kids with their existence.

Music, it is never to be free

Hannah Kim

These days, one of the most controversial argument is about copyright and intelletual property. Some people suggest that all people have right to enjoy musics or movies not paying. They say that people would decide whether to buy after enjoying all the musics or movies they were interested in, if they are worth buy and keep for a long time. On the other hand, there are also many people who are against to this idea. They think that all the musics and movies are just the same as the normal properties, therefore if there is anyone who wants to share these, it is like a theft. Although I think both sides are understandable, I agree to the saying that the musics or all the different forms of intelletual properties are to be paid.

First of all, I believe that musics or movies are also the valuable properties for the people who produced them. This is what intellectual property is about. The definition of this term is an intangible asset, such as a copyright or patent and this is also a kind of properties that can belong to someone and others cannot share. Therefore, I think that making music is the same as working in the workplace for normal people. The music producers or singers have to make fair amount of money with their own musics, selling to the public and this is like workers being paid salaries. However, when all the musics are shared in the Internet, not being charged, the people who support their own lives with these musics should suffer from unfair treatment in making money, since they cannot make enough profits.

Second, paying for musics that we own is helpful for the development of the music industry. It is natural that if there are not enough capital, it is impossible to improve. For example, people cannot try a fresh, new technical change without money that can handle this. In addition, when people are disappointed and frustrated due to the fact that they cannot earn the fair amount of money with their music, they would not that passionate as before, making music. They would not be motivated because their living does not go better with their ard work. Thus, it is necessary to pay for their hard work and production.

Although there are many people who say that today's musics are not worth paying because they are all similar and have no deep meaning or emotion inside. I also agree with this thinking, but I do not think that this fact justifies the free downloading and sharing of the musics. I believe that if the musics are bad in quality, people should not enjoy listening these. They tend to get the free, illegal musics from the Internet and listen, complaining that it does not worth money if they have to pay money. This is ridiculous because I think that they actually like the music, regardless the fact whether the quality of these musics are good or not. Then, it is natural to pay for having a good time listening to those musics.

In conclusion, I do not think it is acceptable to download or share musics freely and illegally off the Internet. Musics should be seen as a one from of intelletual property and they have copyrights and values as tangible properties. In addition, there should be fortune to develop the music industry and this means that people 'buy' the music. This would lead to good conclusion for the consumers also, because they can listen to fine and fresh musics.
