| Last year, I went to Japan with my three of friends to study about Yurukyara. We got this chance from HUFS to the World Program and that was the only reason why we visited such a small town, Hikone, Osaka. If we weren't interested in Yurukyara, I don't think I will never have to go there because Hikone was a really small town far from Kyoto nothing but to see than Hikone Castle. I guess you are now really confused with Yurukyara. What is it? It's a compound name for town characters. This compound word "Yurukyara" is formed from "Yurui" and "Kyarakuta which is character in English." Yurui means loose or plain or even dull, and Kyarakuta is Japanese way to say character. Therefore, Yurukyara could mean that characters with plain and dull appearances. Among so many Yurukyaras, Hikonyan is the most popular character throughout Japan. This is Hikonyan.
The festival organization's job was to send invitation to characters to join this festival. Because there are uncountable numbers of town characters all around Japan and because Hikone is just a small countryside town, they cannot invite them all to come to the festival. During the festival, there is PR time for each character on stage and every character has their own booths to sell their goods. Also, they have photo times with people who want to take pictures with Yurukyara. People are mostly wearing their yukata, light cotton summer kimonos. Every weekend, there is Hanabi-taikai which is a large amount of fireworks upon the sky. The streets in Hikone was decorated beautifully with various colors of panels and balloons like this picture and crowded with so many people.
I personally think that if you are crazy about characters, you may go Hikone to see the festival. It was fairly well organized festival even though it's not a major festival in Japan, but still it's very unique and special for people who are deeply interested in. For me, I don't think I will never have to go there if I wasn't going to study about the Yurukyara. But still, like Disney lands, it was a fabulous festival with lively walking characters and so much excited people. I attatched some pictures to help you to understand better because I don't think you have enough background information about this festival or even Japanes culture. Thank you for reading my writing!

ReplyDelete1. What I like about this piece of writing is that it is such an interesting story! I have never thought that you would write about Japanese festival. This was useful information that made me know a new festival around the world. Also, talking about the writing itself, it was great essay because I had no difficulty reading it. It was really natural and I always find the easy essay is the best one. Not only that, you explained very specifically about the festival- the place where holds this festival, the meaning of the festival name and so on. This made me understand this festival really well, therefore I was not irritated at all, trying to figure out what is this festival about.
2. To talk about your main point, you wanted to say about the Japanese festival- Yurukyara in Hitone. In this festival, characters of every town are invited and introduce themselves. They also sell some souvenirs to tourists.
3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:
1) Last year, I went to Japan with my three of friends to study about Yurukyara. => I think this is an attractive hook for readers and I really like it. When a writer starts with his/her own experience, I always want to read it and so become curious about the story. In addition, this hook started and connected with the next sentence really softly, and I felt really comfortable to read and concentrate on the story.
2) Therefore, Yurukyara could mean that characters with plain and dull appearances. => This part was great because you sum up the idea. Although it was just an explanation about the meaning of foreign word, you concluded well. As you attach this sentence at the end of your explanation, the meaning became clearer; therefore it made readers understand more clearly.
3) As you might guess already, Hikonyan is the main character of Hikone, and that is why the Yurukyara Festival held in Hikone. => I found this sentence great because this makes clear why the festival is held in that city. Because of this kind of sentence, I think the essay is read easily- with no difficulty understanding.
4. Some things aren’t clear to me. These lines or parts could be improved (meaning not clear, supporting points missing, order seems mixed up, writing not lively):
At first, when I saw the word ‘Character’, I wondered. As you know, there are a lot of meanings in character. Therefore, extra explanation would make readers easy to get an idea of the word ‘character’ as you intended.
You wrote about Japanese festival! It's so surprising and interesting! I read it with much interest, but I wish I could see those pictures you uploaded with (pictures are not seen T_T) I hope I could knew more about Yurukyara. I searched yurukyara to see just pictures of that festival or at least charaters, but there was nothing in the internet. It must be really small town's festival.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to know your name...since you didn't show any of your information^^;; I suggest you to think of changing 'my three of friends' into 'three of my friends' or 'my three friends'.
Also, you mentioned in your writing that you would never go to the festival if you didn't want to study yurukyara. It would be nice if you introduce us when and how you became to learn about it and why you decided to study more about it. I just think it would be better for readers to find the reason why people like that character and why it is famous. Thanks for your writing^^
